An online blogger from Spice Works, posted a question asking, "What are your opinions on hiring someone with a tattoo? In a customer facing job or otherwise. Would you feel comfortable having tattoos and doing well in an interview with them" (Tattoos in the workplace). The reason why the blogger posted this question was because he wanted to get a full sleeve tattoo, but he was not sure how his boss would react. With 333 responses, some felt that it was acceptable to have tattoos; however, they should be covered up. Others felt that having visible tattoos can highly jeopardize a man or woman's chance of being called back for another interview or for the job. The amount of responses provided different opinions on acceptance of tattoos in the workplace both positive and negative. Some people said that it is the company's choice and decision about dress codes pertaining to body art.
One blogger who responded back made a suggestion that it is okay to get tattoos, but place them on a spot of the body where it can be covered up if necessary. The responder stated, "Tattoos do have a negative effect in interviews. If you do get it done, make sure you wear long sleeves for meetings and interviews. And make sure that its not vulgar. No professional will hire someone with a naked chick fighting a dragon tattooed on his arm" (Tattoos in the workplace). Tattoos are supposed to have meaning and symbolic reasoning, so it is acceptable to make a employee cover up if the tattoo is vulgar or offensive.
Another person responded with, "In a professional place they should not be visible. Anywhere else show your ink pride" (Tattoos in the workplace). There were other responses that were similar to this one about how it is okay to have tattoos, but its a wise idea to have them covered for work.
A man who is in charge of hiring at the SCA, left a comment stating, "I do the hiring here and all of our IT people are customer facing. My opinion about tattoos doesn't matter, but the opinions of the clients do matter. As a result, a sleeve would mean no job here. We are trying to provide a professional service and that starts with a professional appearance" (Tattoos in the workplace). There were a few other responses that were from other people in charge of hiring for companies and had replied back with a similar responses to ones that were previously stated. This response is not just from another employee, but an employer who is in charge of hiring, so this demonstrates the workplaces disapproval for tattoos. The costumers opinion is very important so this influences employers to disapprove of tattoos in the workplace.
