Hello, my name is Christina Gabriele and I attend the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. I am a sophomore and studying sports medicine. I have created this website based off of my research on why the workplace is not accepting of tattoos, even though tattoos are a current trend. This research is for my composition 2 class which is taught by Jessica Blackburn.
Did you know that one in five United States adults have a tattoo (Gouveia, Aaron)? Today there is approximately 21 percent of adults that have visible tattoos. Tattoos have been around for centuries. Tattoos used to be looked at as trashy, disrespectful, and only being stereotypical for sailors, rebels, and servicemen. However, in today's society, tattoos are widely accepted and can be seen in a more positive light. Tattoos are a form of art and expression, and are symbolic.
Due to the increase of people with body art, why does the workplace look down on people with tattoos? Society has become more accepting of tattoos, yet the workplace is still not as welcome to the idea. However, it is reasonable that an employer might ask an employee to cover up his or her tattoos if there are multiple tattoos exposed such as an arm sleeve or if the tattoos are vulgar. In today's workplace, most employers expect their employees to be completely covered up so no tattoos are visible. Every workplace has its own rules strictly pertaining to body art.
